The History of the Knights Templar in the Province.
Founded in the 12th century during the Crusading era, the Knights Templar became one of the most powerful and respected religious and military orders in medieval Europe. Arriving in Lancashire, Cumberland, and Westmorland soon after, the Order established important centres such as Preston Priory and acquired extensive estates throughout the region. These lands provided income, resources, and support for the Templars’ mission to protect Christian pilgrims and defend the Holy Land.
Although the original medieval Order was suppressed in 1312, the traditions, symbolism, and values of the Knights Templar endured through the centuries. Within Freemasonry, those traditions were revived and continue today through the United Religious, Military and Masonic Orders of the Temple and of St John of Jerusalem, Palestine, Rhodes and Malta. The Provincial Priory of Lancashire, Cumberland and Westmorland has now existed for more than 170 years, preserving the Christian and chivalric principles of the Order for modern Freemasons.
Today, the Province is home to 32 active Preceptories meeting across Lancashire, Cumberland, and Westmorland. Among the oldest is Jerusalem Preceptory No. 5, which traces its history back to the earliest days of organised Knights Templar Masonry in the North West. Across the Province, Sir Knights continue to uphold the traditions of faith, honour, fellowship, and charity while welcoming new members to begin their own Templar journey.
